The Davis Chamber of Commerce Women in Business announced today that the recipient of their 2025 Athena Award is Joy Petro, Mayor of Layton. The award will be presented at their annual Athena luncheon to be held Tuesday, February 25th, 2025, at 11:30 a.m. at the Davis Conference Center in Layton.
The prestigious Athena International Award is given to individuals who meet the following criteria:
- Demonstrate excellence, creativity, and initiative in their business or profession.
- Provide valuable service by contributing time and energy to improve the quality of life for others in the community.
- Actively assist women in realizing their full leadership potential.
Petro has lived in Layton the vast majority of her life. She believes it is important to preserve Layton’s rich and diverse heritage, its farming roots, while balancing the future needs of the community. Joy lives in the Gentile Street historical home she restored, receiving the State of Utah Excellence in Preservation award.
Petro has served as the Mayor of Layton City since January 6, 2020. Prior to that, she was a Layton City Council member, having been elected in 2013. She was also the recipient of the Ronald Reagan Community Award. Petro is the Chair of the Davis County Board of Health and the North Davis Sewer District, as well as the Vice Chair of the Wasatch Front Regional Council Active Transportation.
Petro is a past Chair of Wasatch Integrated Waste Management, Davis Council of Government, and the Layton Heritage Museum. She is also a Board Member of the Layton Rotary Club, Davis Chamber of Commerce, and Intermountain Hospital. In her free time, she enjoys carpentry work (especially restoration), looking for unique antiques and playing a variety of sports. Above all, she loves her family dearly and they are the most important factor in her life.
President of the Davis Chamber, Angie Osguthorpe, said this about Mayor Petro, “Along with being an excellent mayor, Joy is a selfless community advocate. She goes above and beyond to show up and help whenever possible. She is humble and embodies the eight attributes of the International Athena Award: Authentic Self, Relationships, Giving Back, Collaboration, Courageous Acts, Learning, Fierce Advocacy, and Celebration and Joy. We are so honored to be able to present her with this prestigious award.”
