Why Layton City is a Great Place to Operate a Business

Layton City is well known in Utah as an ideal place to operate a business in a business-friendly community. Home to about 80,000, Layton citizens enjoy a thriving economy with consistent growth in business and career opportunities. With a vibrant culture and robust economic growth, it’s no wonder the city has achieved rankings as one of the best places to live.

Outstanding educational institutions, UTOPIA’s high-speed fiber optic network providing dedicated, unshared, uninterrupted Internet connections to all businesses (up to 100 mbs) are just some of the reasons why so many entrepreneurs and established firms choose to operate here.

Layton is well-governed, with pride in its business friendly environment, and employs an experienced, professional, efficient staff. Layton offers well-planned industrial areas, strong retail centers, and accessible office space. The city has a young, well-educated and diverse workforce that fits many business needs. Access to good education is abundant, from an advanced grade school focused on STEM, to a well-respected technical college and university in and around Layton.

Layton is a major employment center for Northern Utah. Immediately adjacent to Hill Air Force Base, the largest single site employer in Utah, the city also retains major employment sectors such as composites, advanced manufacturing, healthcare, education, finance, hospitality, manufacturing, retail, and a wide spectrum of additional employers. With added growth in businesses, transportation and population, Layton continues to lead regionally and strengthen economically.

Layton City’s Community and Economic Development department hosts popular and educational Small Business Seminars. The classes offer the opportunity for local business leaders to spend a lunchbreak learning how to make their business more successful from their peers.  The event now occurs monthly and topics are often selected based on comments and suggestions by those participating.

Before the coronavirus pandemic, classes were held in-person with a free lunch. The city plans to return to that format hopefully later this year. In the meantime, seminars are held online. Past classes have provided effective training on a wide array of business-related topics by local business owners and experts. Topics have included: Small Business Concerns and Tax Strategies, Online Marketing: How to rank your business on Page One of Google, and Business Marketing 101: How to Stand out in a Competitive Market.

Layton City also works in conjunction with the local Small Business Development Center in Kaysville, Utah, to plan and produce its Small Business Seminars. Layton is the only city in Davis County that provides this type of free business education and training.

Layton offers incentives to select businesses seeking to locate or expand. Incentives include reimbursement through tax increment financing agreements within designated and adopted urban renewal areas. In addition, Layton’s Opportunity Zone provides incentive to reinvest within its downtown area.

Layton City acknowledges the importance of urban renewal as the number one tool for attracting growth and promoting economic development.  This tool allows new growth to pay itself through its own property taxes; funding public and private infrastructure and development through reimbursement over time that would otherwise be funded through citywide property taxes.  It is a tool to obtain new job opportunities, new public infrastructure, and a higher tax base with the least impact on local property tax compared to all other options.  The City estimates that over $180 million in added value and new investment has occurred within its urban renewal districts since 2004, bringing employers such as Home Depot, WinCo, Young Kia, Kihomac, Janicki Industries, Westest Engineering, RC Willey, Kay’s Crossing Apartments, and many more valued employers and Layton residents.

Layton City is indeed a place where community, prosperity and choice are a way of life. It’s certainly an exciting time to be located in Layton and we look forward to discussing your business growth needs. Contact Layton City’s Economic Development Department with any questions you may have today.
