How Layton City Helps Provide new Affordable Homes

With the current high cost of homes in the state, along with high interest mortgage rates, Layton City and its construction partners are once again seeking to provide affordable housing options to the community. Their goal is to construct affordable homes discounted substantially for low-to-moderate-income households.

Layton City is looking to purchase property utilizing Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds, and then donate the land to its partner, Have a Heart. The Have a Heart Home foundation is a nonprofit, joint initiative of the Northern Wasatch Association of Realtors and the Northern Wasatch Home Builders Association and provides housing opportunities to households that are unable to own their own home without assistance.

Included with this housing program is a discounted mortgage tailored to meet a low-to-moderate-income family’s financial circumstances. The program is currently available to qualified residents of Layton City. Have a Heart oversees partnerships with local cities to acquire lots, and with local contractors, subcontractors and suppliers who donate a wide spectrum of services and supplies, or provide them at a very low cost, to build an affordable home. The organization works with local construction firms to help with the building efforts of the new home.

Have a Heart and Layton City have been providing these types of affordable homes for decades, and have made a profound impact on the community and the families served. If you know of an available vacant lot, or know a family that may be interested in the Have a Heart program, please contact Morgan Cloward, Layton City Community & Economic Development Specialist at 801-336-3770, mcloward@laytoncity.org, or visit the Have a Heart website to fill out an application.
